Online trades learning and Red Seal exam preparation

Learn the trade.
Get exam-ready.

Self-paced online courses for Welding, Metal Fabricator and Ironworker apprentices and tradespeople — $700 CAD per level with 12 months of access, so you can study around your shifts. Apprenticeship registration, hours and certification are handled by your provincial apprenticeship authority.

Study at Apex

Three ways to study

Whether you are studying your first level, preparing to write the Red Seal exam, or building the business side of your trade — start from the option that fits where you are now.

Trade courses by level

Online lessons and chapter quizzes for your trade, level by level, built around the topics apprentices are examined on. $700 CAD per level, 12 months of access. Self-study — it does not replace registered technical training or count toward apprenticeship hours.

Red Seal exam preparation

Practice questions weighted to the published Red Seal exam blueprint, for people who are already eligible to write. For Welding: a $700 review level with lessons is available now, and a $99 practice-exam-only option is coming. Start with the free welding practice test.

Estimating and business

Estimating, quoting and job-costing tools for tradespeople moving into supervision, estimating or running their own shop. Apex Pro membership from $29 CAD a month.

Estimating and business

Become an estimator

The trade pays for what you can build. Estimating pays for what you can price. The Estimator Pathway takes the trade knowledge you already have and turns it into customer-ready takeoffs, quotes and job costs.

  • Estimating and takeoff workbooks you keep
  • Markup, margin and job-costing fundamentals
  • A portfolio piece to show an employer or a client

Student support

Built around working apprentices

Most people studying at Apex are already on the tools. The program is shaped around that rather than around a term calendar.

Start where you actually are

Buy the level you need rather than a whole program. Each level unlocks that level's lessons and quizzes for 12 months, and you move on when you are ready — you are never held back by a cohort.

Certification stays with your province

Apex is study material, not a certifying body. Whether you can write a provincial or Red Seal exam is decided by your provincial apprenticeship authority, based on registration and documented hours. We point you to the right authority and help you prepare.

How certification works

Answers before you commit

Enrolment, refunds, exam attempts and what happens when your access period ends — all set out plainly before you pay for anything.

Land acknowledgement

We acknowledge Treaty 6 territory

Apex Technical Training honours and acknowledges that the land on which we learn, work and live is Treaty 6 territory — the traditional lands of the nêhiyawak (Cree), Denesųłiné (Dene), Anishinaabe (Saulteaux), Nakota Sioux (Stoney) and Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) peoples, and a homeland of the Métis. We recognize the skill, craft and knowledge Indigenous peoples have carried on this land since long before the trades were formalized, and we are committed to making technical training accessible to Indigenous apprentices across Treaty 6 and beyond.
